The Migrant City – Urban Belonging in Germany
In our research project The Migrant City – Urban Belonging in Germany, based at the FernUniversität in Hagen, we are investigating how adults in Germany make use of places in the city. We want to find out which places are particularly good for people’s psychological well-being.
We are particularly interested in the places where people feel at home and feel that they belong. We would also like to know whether newly arrived people and migrants or those who have lived in the city for a long time feel that different places are particularly important for their well-being and their sense of belonging.
Project Duration 2022-2025
Go-Along-Interviews
In a first step to explore people’s sense of belonging in urban spaces, our researchers went for walks with study participants. Participants shared and showed us their favourite spaces in the cities of Berlin, Bremen, Leipzig and Stuttgart.
Qualitative Data Analysis
Our team started analysing the data obtained from the interviews – some of the pictures taken during our urban walks you can find here.
First Publication of Results
Our first publication for the Migrant City was published in the Journal of Identity! You can access it here free of costs.
Questionnaire Design
With our cooperation partners, we are currently designing our questionnaire and adapting an app to fit our needs for the quantitative data collection.
Recruitment of Participants for the App Study
We are aiming to recruit at least 250 participants from different cities in Germany for our App-Study.
Data Collection
Data Collection via the App has started in July 2024.
Data Analysis
Once all of our participants have completed their 1-week contribution to our project we will begin analysing the data.
Join our Study via App in your City
We would like to conduct a real-life study to find out how you feel in different situations and places in everyday life. The aim of the study is to discover the places that make people feel at home in German cities.
An app will help you to record your impressions and experiences over the course of a week.
